- THE DECADE OF DISCONTENT -
A flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil can cause a tornado in Texas, or a hurricane in Florida, or lightning in England. We’ve all heard this before – the butterfly effect. The butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the tornado’s occurrence in the first place. The flapping wing represents a small change in the condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the course of events might have been vastly different – the tornado might have hit Kansas, the hurricane might not have arrived, the lightning might never have struck. The idea is that they tiniest of things can set unbelievably huge events into motion.
And if we believe this to be true, then why shouldn’t the same be true of our lives? If one little thing had been different in our lives – if a butterfly had flapped its wings – might we not be in a completely different place? If Petunia Evans had come to Hogwarts, perhaps Dudley Dursley would never have been born. If Alice WINS.AT.LIFE – future mother of Neville Longbottom – had been in love with Sirius Black, perhaps she never would have been tortured. If Lily Evans had been betrothed to Severus Snape, perhaps she wouldn’t have died. What if history was rewritten? What if a butterfly had flapped its wings?
It’s 1976. Voldemort is at the height of his power. People are changing. Friends are turning on friends, families are breaking apart. Where there was once light, there is now only dark. So the question is, are you strong enough to survive the decade of discontent? [/font]
